The harm of online rumors:

Spreading online rumors has been incorporated into the criminal law, and the maximum sentence for the following four cases is seven years:
1、 From November 1, 2015, with the formal implementation of the Criminal Law Amendment (9) of the People's Republic of China, anyone who spreads false information on WeChat, Weibo and other social platforms, causing serious consequences, will be sentenced to a maximum of seven years' imprisonment.
2、 The amendment (9) of the Criminal Law adds a provision in Article 291 of the Criminal Law: Whoever fabricates false dangerous information, epidemic situation, disaster situation or police situation, spreads it on the information network or other media, or knowingly spreads it on the information network or other media, deliberately disturbs the social order, shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than three years, criminal detention or public surveillance;If serious consequences are caused, he shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not less than three years but not more than seven years.
3、 In September 2013, the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate of the People's Republic of China announced a judicial interpretation that: if the same defamatory information is actually clicked and viewed more than 5000 times, or forwarded more than 500 times, it shall be deemed as "serious" as stipulated in the first paragraph of Article 246 of the Criminal Law, which can constitute a crime of defamation.
4、 On August 29, 2015, after three deliberations and many amendments, the Ninth Amendment to the Criminal Law was voted by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, which punished four kinds of online rumors and took more stringent measures to govern online rumors according to law.
