World Health Organization: Sudan has reported about 1.3 million malaria cases since the outbreak of armed conflict

On March 7 local time, the World Health Organization (WHO) sent a message on social media saying that in more than 10 months since the outbreak of armed conflict in Sudan last April, the country has reported about 1.3 million cases of malaria. The WHO said that as many cases were not reported, the epidemic may be more serious.

WHO also said that the chaos of social order, massive population displacement, shortage of various materials and the failure of the epidemic monitoring and control system caused by the conflict have greatly hindered the epidemic prevention and control work in Sudan.

On April 15, 2023, an armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Force broke out in Khartoum, the capital of the country, and then spread to other areas, and has continued to this day. The conflict caused a serious humanitarian disaster in the country. According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, 70% to 80% of medical and health institutions in Sudan have stopped operating due to the impact of armed conflict, and more than 65% of the population in the country cannot access medical services. Cholera, dengue fever, malaria and other infectious diseases are spreading widely in Sudan.
